Bathroom Downlights Guide: How to Choose the Best IP65 Downlights

Check the IP Rating

The IP rating tells you how well the fitting is protected against solids and moisture. Bathroom Zones 1 and 2 normally require at least IPX4, with IPX5 required where water jets are likely. Choosing an IP65 downlight provides a useful higher level of protection for many bathroom applications.

Understand Bathroom Zones

The closer a light fitting is to a bath or shower, the greater the protection required. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself and requires specialist equipment. Zones 1 and 2 cover areas above and around the bath or shower. Always confirm the proposed position with a competent electrician.

Choose Fire-Rated Downlights

Cutting a hole into a fire-resistant ceiling can affect its ability to resist the spread of fire. Fire-rated downlights are designed to help restore that protection. Many modern fittings are tested for 30, 60 and 90-minute ceilings.

Choose the Right Colour Temperature

2700K–3000K creates a warmer, relaxing bathroom atmosphere. 4000K produces a clean neutral white that works particularly well around mirrors and vanity areas. CCT-selectable downlights give you several options from one fitting.

Look at Lumens, Not Just Watts

LED wattage tells you how much power a fitting uses, while lumens tell you how much light it produces. A lower-wattage modern LED can therefore produce more usable light than an older fitting with a higher wattage.

Measure the Ceiling Cut-Out

Never order replacement downlights based only on their outside diameter. Measure the existing ceiling cut-out and check the required recess depth. Low-profile fittings can be especially useful where ceiling void space is restricted.

Fixed or Tilt?

Fixed downlights are ideal for general bathroom lighting. Tilt or adjustable models can be useful when you want to direct light towards a vanity, feature wall, shower area or another specific part of the room.

Check Dimming & Insulation Compatibility

If you want softer lighting in the evening, choose a dimmable fitting and make sure your LED dimmer is compatible. Also check whether the fitting is rated for contact with insulation before covering or surrounding it.
