Description

The Collingwood SL220BK27XF is a black, low-voltage LED spike light for highlighting planting, tree trunks and garden features. Its fixed 2700K warm white light gives outdoor spaces a softer appearance, while the 40° beam provides broader coverage than the narrow 12° version in the SL220 range.

The black anodised aluminium housing sits discreetly within a planting scheme. A ground spike allows positioning in suitable soil, and the head tilts through 90°, helping you direct the light towards the feature rather than leaving it aimed towards viewers.

Five output levels through the choice of driver

This model supports five published operating points, determined by the compatible constant-current driver:

  • 150mA - 0.8W, producing 129 lumens

  • 250mA - 1.4W, producing 208 lumens

  • 350mA - 2W, producing 297 lumens

  • 500mA - 3W, producing 396 lumens

  • 700mA - 4.6W, producing 515 lumens

This allows the installer to select an appropriate output for the lighting design, from subtle accent lighting to stronger illumination of a feature.

The colour remains 2700K at every operating point. There is no colour-temperature or wattage-selection switch on the light itself.

Separate constant-current driver required

The LED driver is not included. This is the low-voltage SL220 version and requires a suitable constant-current driver, selected for the operating current and connected load.

It must not be connected directly to 230V mains or treated as a standard 12V or 24V constant-voltage fitting. Where several lights share a driver, Collingwood specifies series wiring. The driver’s permitted load and output-voltage range must suit the complete installation.

Outdoor protection and a supplied 3m cable

The light has an IP65 rating, and Collingwood identifies it as suitable for coastal areas. A 3m H05RN-F rubberised cable is supplied for connection to the lighting system.

Waterproof connection accessories are purchased separately. Collingwood recommends suitable IP68 connectors, including its JB2, JB4 and JB6 products, for protecting the installation joints.

Optional accessories to reduce glare

Where the light source is visible from a path, seating area or window, compatible glare-control accessories can help. The separately available GS220 snoot provides shielding around the source, while the GH220 hood controls glare from one side.

The modular design also allows the LED light source to be replaced by an appropriate professional. Collingwood publishes an L70 70,000-hour LED lifetime for the fitting.

FAQ's

What is different about the SL220BK27XF version?

This exact model combines a black anodised aluminium housing, 2700K warm white light, 40° beam and a low-voltage constant-current supply requirement.

What is the difference between XF and XS?

The matching XF version has a 40° beam, while XS has a 12° beam. The 40° model spreads light more broadly; the narrower version concentrates it on a smaller area at the same distance.

Does it include an LED driver?

No. A compatible constant-current driver is purchased separately. The driver must suit the selected operating current and the complete connected load.

Can it connect directly to mains or a 12V garden-light transformer?

No. It requires one of its specified DC constant-current settings, rather than direct 230V mains or a standard constant-voltage supply.

How are the five power levels selected?

The driver’s output current determines the operating point. There is no five-position wattage switch on the light itself.

What output does each current setting provide?

The published figures are 129lm at 150mA, 208lm at 250mA, 297lm at 350mA, 396lm at 500mA and 515lm at 700mA. Colour temperature remains 2700K throughout.

Is 700mA the maximum permitted current?

Yes. Collingwood’s installation instructions specify 700mA maximum. Do not select a higher current to increase brightness.

Can several fittings operate from one driver?

Yes, where the driver supports the required series string. Check its operating current, minimum load and output-voltage range. Adding the nominal wattages alone is not sufficient.

Should the lights be wired in series or parallel?

Collingwood specifies series wiring for this low-voltage model. Follow the driver and fitting instructions rather than using the parallel arrangement common to constant-voltage lighting systems.
