The Astro Taro Round is installed after plastering and requires an 86mm circular ceiling cut-out. Its fixed lamp position makes it well suited to general lighting layouts where the beam does not need to be tilted or redirected.

90-Minute Fire-Rated Ceiling Downlight

The product-specific Astro datasheet states that the Taro Round 1240024 provides a 90-minute fire rating tested to BS 476 Part 21.

Fire-rated downlights are designed to help maintain the fire resistance of a ceiling after an opening has been created for the fitting. This makes the Taro Round suitable for relevant residential, hospitality and commercial projects where the ceiling construction requires a tested fire-rated downlight.

The complete ceiling system, installation method and surrounding materials must remain compatible with the fire-rating requirements of the building.

Matt White Fixed Downlight

Product code 1240024 is the Matt White version of the Astro Taro Round. Its neutral finish blends naturally into white and light-coloured ceilings, helping the fitting remain visually discreet.

Astro’s current product page lists a maximum lamp rating of 1 × 50W GU10, while the product datasheet recommends using a maximum 6W LED GU10. An energy-efficient LED GU10 within the specified size limit is the most appropriate modern option for most installations.

The Astro Taro Round can be dimmed when fitted with a compatible dimmable GU10 lamp and connected to a suitable LED dimmer.

This allows the lighting level to be increased for practical tasks or reduced to create softer evening illumination. Dimming performance depends on the lamp and dimmer selected, so compatibility should be checked before installation.

Lamp-Dependent Light Output

The Taro Round does not contain an integrated LED. Its lumen output, colour temperature, CRI, beam angle and expected lamp life are determined by the GU10 lamp selected.

This replaceable-lamp design gives installers flexibility to tailor the downlight to different rooms and applications. It also allows the lamp to be changed later without replacing the complete ceiling fitting.

This differs from trimless plaster-in downlights, which need to be fitted before the final plaster skim. The Taro Round uses a visible circular bezel that covers the edge of the ceiling cut-out.

IP20 Interior Downlight

The Astro Taro Round has an IP20 rating and is designed for dry indoor environments.

IP20 does not provide rated protection against water, so the fitting should not be installed in wet bathroom zones, shower areas or locations exposed to splashing water.

Astro lists the downlight as suitable for bathroom zone 3, which is a dry bathroom location outside the principal water-exposure zones.

Class I Earthed Construction

The Taro Round is a Class I earthed fitting, meaning a protective earth connection is required.

It is designed for a hardwired mains electrical connection and does not require a separate LED driver. The GU10 lamp operates directly through the fitting’s mains-powered lamp holder.

Important Insulation and Mounting Requirements

Astro’s datasheet states that the Taro Round is not suitable for covering with thermal insulation and is not suitable for mounting in flammable materials.

Required ventilation and clearance around the fitting must be maintained. The ceiling construction, insulation arrangement and installation method should be checked before fitting.
