FAQ's

Why is a LiFePO4 battery used instead of a NiCd battery in emergency lighting?

LiFePO4 batteries generally offer longer service life, improved thermal stability and lower maintenance requirements compared to older nickel-cadmium battery technologies. They are also less susceptible to memory effect issues.

What happens if I fit a battery with a higher capacity than the original?

Using a higher-capacity battery may affect charging characteristics, emergency duration calculations and manufacturer compliance. Emergency lighting systems should always use the specified replacement battery.

Does replacing the battery restore the emergency lighting fitting to full performance?

Only if the battery is the source of the fault. If LEDs, charging circuits or control gear have deteriorated, replacing the battery alone may not resolve performance issues.

Can a battery pass a short function test but still fail a full duration test?

Yes. A battery may successfully power the fitting for a few minutes during routine function testing but fail during a full-duration discharge test because of reduced capacity caused by ageing.

Is it better to replace the battery or the entire emergency fitting?

For newer luminaires, battery replacement is often the most cost-effective option. However, if the fitting is nearing end-of-life or uses obsolete components, replacing the complete luminaire may provide better long-term value.
